2018 Scrummer Reading List

Image
2018 Scrummer Reading List Our annual tribute to beach reads is back. We asked our team what books they are taking to the beach this summer and they responded with some great suggestions; a combination of fiction, non-fiction, business books and academic papers that make for great additions to any reading list. (Also good for cozy winter reading for our friends in the southern hemisphere). Jeff Sutherland, Founder and Principal Consultant of Scrum Inc. and co-creator of Scrum recommends: " The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups "  by Daniel Coyle This is a new book recommended by one of our new S@S Certified Trainers, Julie Chickering. It is awesome because it provides examples and research data on what personal interactions are essential to hyper-productive teams.   JJ Sutherland, Chief Executive Officer recommends: " The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook: Strategies and Tools

How to Measure Happiness Across a Large Group by Joe Justice | July 19, 2018 | Blog An aerospace parts client recently emailed me asking how to measure happiness across a group of hundreds of employees. Since this is a question we get frequently, I thought it would be a great idea to share the answer with all of you. Here is what I've learned about measuring team happiness: The happiness metric retrospective is easy to run via the team’s Scrum Masters. It can also be approximated through a simple survey for teams or employees not on a scrum team. The Scrum Master asks these four questions : On a scale of 1 to 5, how happy are you with your role? On a scale of 1 to 5, how happy are you with your team? On a scale of 1 to 5, how happy are you with the company? What could we do next sprint that would make you happier? After this, the Scrum Master facilitates a team discussion on what the team could do, during the next sprint, that might increase the entire team’s happin

Performance Appraisals Update

Image
Impediments of Performance Appraisals The research on performance appraisal shows that they: Demotivate employees 70% of content is about the manager, not the employee, and the remainder often does not accurately reflect employee performance because the manager does not really know day to day what happens (the team does). They increase damage awards in the event of lawsuits Direct and immediate feedback is helpful (not performance appraisals) Perversely, employees want performance appraisals to use as an argument for salary increase even though they demotivate rather than motivate the employee See for example, " Abolishing Performance Appraisals: Why They Backfire and What to Do Instead " by Tom Coens and Mary Jenkins. If performance appraisals are not abolished here is an alternative solution Objectify the appraisal On a scale of 1-10, a manager can give a 5 if the employee meets expectations, a 6 for exceeding expectations, and a 4 for not meeting expectation

Scrum Hardware: eXtreme Manufacturing Explained

Scrum Hardware: eXtreme Manufacturing Explained by Joe Justice | July 13, 2018 | Blog A continuously improving blast of new, high-quality products which get the marketplace excited, tests assumptions and makes money;  That is the goal of Scrum Hardware. To Scrum hardware, we need fast design. The rules of Scrum give us a powerful and tested framework for new product development. To design with quality in short cycles, we need fast tests in the same room as design. To release to production from the same room as design, we need flexible manufacturing. That’s where eXtreme Manufacturing comes in. It provides the technical practices to test and select the tools, materials, orientations, and flows that can give us mass-production quality with no additional cost to build something better than what we just built. This is how we achieve continuous deployment without over-extending our resources. To see a lap around the eXtreme Manufacturing technical practices, please watch this
